Sling-shooting: an ancient sport with a competitive edge
Almost everyone remembers playing with a slingshot as a child—using a homemade one and a handful of pebbles. What fewer people know is that this game has since evolved into a full-fledged competitive sport in Flanders. Under the auspices of the Flemish Slingshot Association, shooters of all ages and both genders compete against one another, both at the recreational and competitive levels.
Rules
Sling shooting is all about precision. Using a shooting cloth and glass marbles or steel balls, shooters try to knock down seven targets located ten meters away. The smaller the target, the higher the point value: the smallest target, measuring just 45 millimeters, is worth ten points, while the largest target, measuring 125 millimeters, is worth only two. Each participant gets seven shots per round, spread over four rounds, for a maximum score of 120 points. Armrests and sights are not allowed, which makes the shooting just as challenging. For safety reasons, everything takes place inside a closed cage.
Sling-shooting combines the nostalgia of a childhood game with the precision of a true sport, making it a surprisingly engaging hobby for young and old alike to discover.
