Shooting sports
People who have never tried shooting often have many preconceptions. Yet competitive shooting requires just as much discipline, physical fitness, and mental strength as other elite sports. With every shot, a shooter must rebuild the necessary concentration and self-control, dozens of times in a row, throughout an entire competition. That combination of physical stability and inner calm makes shooting a unique test of one’s own limits.
Shooting sports: What does this imply?
The term “shooting sports” consists of a wide range of disciplines, which are regulated internationally by the ISSF and in Belgium, administered by the recognized shooting associations (FROS and VSK):
- Target Shooting – pistol or rifle at a fixed distance of 10 to 100 meters, in positions such as standing, prone, or kneeling.
- Clay Shooting – hitting moving clay pigeons with a shotgun.
- Dynamic Shooting (IPSC) – speed, technique, and tactical insight all in one stage.
- Niche Disciplines – including benchrest, lever-action, PRS, and historical shooting with original or replica firearms using black powder.
Shooting is open to people of all ages and skill levels: technique and concentration are just as important as physical strength. Newcomers learn step by step how to handle a firearm safely, and as an individual sport, each shooter is responsible for their own results.
